Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) in Children

IBS Article Sections

Description

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a disorder of the digestive system that causes abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. IBS is classified as a functional disorder, which means the intestine or bowel doesn’t work, or function, correctly. This digestive disorder affects people of all ages, including children.

People affected with IBS tend to have overly sensitive intestine. However, doctors are not sure why the nerves and muscles in the intestine become extra sensitive in people with IBS. Muscle spasms occur in response to food, gas, and sometimes stress. These spasms, or too much contraction, can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, and even constipation.

IBS can be a cause of recurring abdominal pain in children. It affects girls and boys equally. Though IBS is painful, it does not damage the intestine and does not lead to other health problems.
